Health, Education, & Welfare Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)
The members of SCLC view education, health, and safety as critical human rights concerns, not merely quality of life issues.
PUBLIC EDUCATION 1. Enlists faith-based organizations to partner with specific schools and mobilize volunteers to serve to meet the needs identified by the school's principal--tutoring, mentoring, monitoring, etc. The program is known as Save Our Schools. 2. Develop Intervention and support programs that are delivered on-iste at several schools. The CROWNS program includes academic enrichment, team participation, and character development.
PUBLIC HEALTH 1. Promotes preventive health issues in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Health (Division of Disparity Elimination). 2. Develops and supports policies for access to affordable healthcare.
PUBLIC SAFETY 1. Goal is to improve safety and especially to shield children from violence. We cooperate with the Memphis Police Department to remove gang graffiti in public places. 2. Initiate dialogue with gang leaders for a deeper understanding of their actitivy and ways to inegrate them back into mainstream society.
We recognize that in the areas of education, health, and safety much work is need in our community. Volunteers are needed on an on-going basis in all areas. SCLC welcomes to opportunity to work with other organizations.
